Some of the destinations on my trip have truly had a huge impact on the world, others I chose because they are of personal interest. Aircraft manufacturing has always driven innovation that eventually trickles down to all sections of manufacturing. So I chose a plant run by Lockheed Martin, because I love some of the projects they have created, the SR-71 Blackbird is one. Then I hop on over to Kentucky where we find a manufacturing plant of CNC Machines. These machines can be found all over the world, and the amazing precision they can achieve has increased the speed and efficiency that is possible during the machining of components. In fact, entire manufacturing processes have changed thanks to this technology. The Three Gorges Dam and Burj Khalifa reflect the social and economic impact that engineering projects can achieve. The dam provides power to a vast region of China, as well as jobs for the locals. The Burj Khalifa is a pinnacle of design and function, companies are proud to have their offices in the building.   The National Nuclear Museum demonstrates how innovation can be driven by political pressure and social fears. So many technologies, especially those for civil defense were created because of fear of nuclear devices. At one point they wanted to put nuclear reactors in everything, including cars. Thankfully they thought better of that. Engineers are involved in seemingly everything. Most sectors of manufacturing, construction, electronics, medical, aerospace, and many others are heavily influenced by an engineer of some kind. My road trip helps to demonstrate this, as well as take me to some great places I would want to visit. One thing I realized while creating this map, was mechanical engineering is more prevalent than I originally thought. One day I would like to contribute to the world of engineering by working on a project that I can be proud of. I do not expect to change the world, but if I can point to something and tell people, I helped create that, I would be happy.
